The movie is set in China in the 1920s, where the war is on all over China. There's an ambitious and villainous general, Huo Jie. He is so ambitious so that he's willing to do anything to achieve his goals, including killing everyone who's got in his way. He even mess with the Shaolin temple and shot an enemy in the temple. He's just so cruel.
Huo Jie has a second in command who he trusts very much, Tjao Man. But Tjao Man betrayed Huo Jie and tried to kill him and his family. Huo Jie managed to survive but his daughter was injured badly. That's when he went back to the Shaolin temple and asked the monks to help his daughter. Hm.. karma, isn't it?
Huo Jie, who had lost everything, stayed in the Shaolin temple, and there, he found a new wisdom. He regrets his fault in the past, and decided to become a monk, practice Shaolin kungfu and learn its philosophy. He then tried to rescue the victims of Tjao Man's cruelty along with the other monks.
In the end, Huo Jie must face Tjao Man. Huo Jie feels responsible for Tjao Man's cruelty as he was the one who taught Tjao Man.
